12 Days of CrossFit Southie

The much anticipated 12 Days of CrossFit Southie WOD will be run today during all classes. I created this workout back in 2008. I gave this workout to Patrick Padgett in a card as a Christmas present that year and it is one of my favorite memories of our friendship, as we battled it out together every year up until last year. I know he will be right by my side again this year pushing me to move faster than ever.

Amy and I also started doing it with our personal training clients years before CrossFit Southie existed. I have seen other versions floating around, but this one is authentic to CFS! Year after year, It is great to see a lot of people giving it a first time go, and then others coming back for a second and third time.

โ€œ12 Days of CrossFit Southieโ€œ
1 Thruster in a Burpee (115, 80)
2 Turkish Get ups (1.5/1; one for each arm)
3 Front Squats (115,80)
4 Clean and Jerks (115,80)
5 GOLDEN SWINGS (1.5/1)
6 SDHP (115,80)
7 Clapping Pushups
8 Knee To Elbows
9 Kipping Pullups
10 Lords of Leaping (24,20)
11 Overhead Squats (115,80)
12 HSPUโ€™s

Level 2 (95,65); (1/.75)
Level 1 (65, 35); (.75/.5)

For each day. you complete the # of reps and work your way down the list, just like the song. After completing the Thruster in a Burpee proceed to the next day. For example on day 5 you would do 5 kb swings, 4 clean and jerks, 3 front squats, 2 turkish get ups and a thruster in a burpee and then proceed on to day 6. This is a tough wod, we can substitute and scale to make it doable for everyone.

    I’m not sure if this was my 3rd or 4th time doing this, but I remember only being able to OHS the pvc pipe my first year… still didn’t finish. Always great to see improvement and to watch everyone grind this one out!

    came VERY close to puking this year which would have been a first
    2012 – 43:30 with 1 pood KB
    2013 – 39:33 Rx

    This was the first Crossfit workout I did 5 years ago. I walked into the gym, told Amy I had been doing CF for years from the main site and set up the workout for rx. After the first thruster Amy took the 25 lb plates off my bar and then watched me fail my first Turkish get up and hand me a kettle bell the size of a golf ball. Fast forward 40 minutes to trying an OHS and the rest of the weight comes off the bar. I do one and drop the empty bar from overhead ending my workout for the day. I couldn’t lift my arms to press the button on my elevator at work the next morning. But couldn’t wait to get back.

    Today was my first time doing this work out since. It’s cool to see improvement.

    44:27 rx. Last year I got 11+12 but didn’t write down cap time. Thinking it was 45 mins. Regardless, it was nice to move faster through the HSPUs this year. I believe I had to do them 1 at a time last year.

    This remains one of the most challenging workouts I’ve ever done.
    2014: 40:34 L2
    Today: 11+19 Rx-ish? (115#, 1.25pd)
    Spent 4 minutes on those last 7 OHS.
    Since I set a goal last year I’ll do the same again. Gotta finish under cap w/ 1.5pd next year.

    12 Days: 11+57 Alt Single-arm KB OHS – the rest Rx. Would have been nice to finish but happy I only had to sub OHS this year.
