The Open is almost here! The first workout will be announced this Thursday night! If you haven’t signed up for the Open yet, no need to worry. You still have time! Just a few quick notes: if you’re logging in using last year’s information, please be sure that you log in and reselect CrossFit Southie as your affiliate – that information does not transfer from year to year. Also, our team name has changed to CrossFit Southie II. If you have already signed up under the previous name, you’ve automatically been moved to this new team.

Take a look below for a recap on what the Open is and how it works, and get pumped to prove your fitness!

What: CrossFitโ€™s largest, most inclusive competition ever! The Open is technically the first step in qualifying for the Reebok CrossFit Games, but itโ€™s also so much more. Itโ€™s an opportunity to throw your hat in the ring and test your fitness against CrossFitters from all over the world.

When: Starting on Thursday, February 27th, CrossFit HQ will release one workout a week for five weeks. Weโ€™ll be testing the workouts here every Friday in classes and on Sunday mornings.

Where: Right here at CrossFit Southie! You donโ€™t even have to travel to compete. Show up to a regularly scheduled Friday class during the Open, and weโ€™ll take you through everything you need to do in order to compete. Itโ€™s that easy!

Who: Everyone! The Open is designed for CrossFitters of all experience and ability levels to compete together. The workouts are accessible enough for everyone to participate to some extent. Regardless of whether or not you move on to compete at Regionals, you can be a part of something huge in our community!

Why: Why not?! The Open is a great way to test your fitness and get a taste of the competitive side of CrossFit. It helps us identify our weaknesses and pushes us to give our best effort during every workout. Plus, your scores can help send two Southie teams to Regionals this year!

How: Follow these easy steps to register for the Open. Make sure youโ€™re registered by Thursday February 27th to ensure your spot!

1. Create an account on games.crossfit.com
2. Register for the Open for $20
3. Select CrossFit Southie as your affiliate
4. Select CrossFit Southie II as your team
5. Complete each workout with a judge each week
6. Submit your scores to the Games website by Monday
7. HAVE FUN!

    Front Squat: #175 x 2
WOD: 14:03, #14 ball, HSPU’s with green band (first time attempting these, I must say they were kinda fun!)

I’m back! I’m glad to be back after a month at home with baby Sammy.

Signed up for the Open and completed the judges course.

Front Squat 185 x2 205×1. Felt weak on the platform. Definitely lost a lot of strength during my break.

18:00 scaled to the max. black ball to 10′, blue band, hand release push-ups.

Tonight was rough but I’m embracing the suck.

Signed up and ready to go..
I think each class should create a sub team so we can compete for bragging rights. I think we should call the 530 team 530HTK..thoughts?

I think that is a great idea. We could track it outside of the crossfit.com website (so we don’t dilute the performance of Southie II by breaking it up into subgroups) and have the results posted on this website at the end of each week to help spur a friendly competition/rivalry amongst the classes.

I’m associated with two classes (mostly 7:00 a.m. but increasingly 6:30 a.m. as well) so I may have to lay down the gauntlet and choose one class if we get this going.

    285×2, 10:30Rx.

Just (finally) signed up for the Open! Team Southie II, I’m gunning for an appearance at Canton this year, let’s do it! Like the others said, if you’re on the fence, I highly suggest you sign up. Any good score can help push the team to regionals!

    18:32 w/ 3 abmats on HSPU’s
Agree completely on the Open. When I did it last year, I had been doing CrossFit for a couple of months and pretty much came in last place amongst those who did all 5 workouts. Even though I was disappointed with my performance I had a blast. More importantly, it set a great benchmark and has been a huge motivator over the past year.
PS – Quigley, I am gunning for you in the Open.

      I love it.
I thought I was gunning for you? Either way it’s going to be a lot of fun.

    255 lb 2RM front squat
    13:01 Rx

Preach, Quigley! Agreed on all points. In the end, it’s all about competing with yourself (I know, it’s cliche). While we all can’t be the 17,744th Fittest Person on Earth, to watch yourself progress, and use the Opens as a benchmark, is truly remarkable. See you all on Friday.

I second what Quigley says about the Open. Lots of fun.

    225×2 front squat, 235×1
17:35ish on the WOD, scaled to 5 HSPU.
I knew today was going to be rough for me, I didn’t think it would be that rough. Going to start working on those HSPUs – surprisingly they aren’t getting any better on their own.
Also, if you’re on the fence about the Opens – don’t be, sign up. If you haven’t been around during the Opens in the past you’ll notice there’s some extra buzz around the gym, people pushing each other, going at workouts multiple times – it’s a great time of the year – so jump in the mix. I didn’t do it in 2012 (I was a few months in at CFS) and I regretted it. I did the damn 7 minutes of burpees that year anyways, so I might as well have made it count.
Take it from me, I’m the 17,744st Fittest Man on Earth, so I know what I’m talking about. Ha!

Let’s hit HSPU after a weekend WOD one of these days. I really need to work on mine as well.

      02/24/2014 @ 5:13 pm

Chris – I’m in. I think strict HSPU are going to be a multiple time per week cashout for me.
Thanks Joe, I was starting to think you just kept me around for my outstanding ranking on the world Crossfit stage.

Not at all. I keep you around so you can correct me when I confuse straight and vertical lines.
