The Opens are Coming

The Open is the first round of the Reebok CrossFit Games in which anyone in the world can throw their hat in the ring and compete.  CrossFit HQ will post one workout per week for five weeks.  Every Wednesday, from March 6 to April 3, an Open workout is released and each week on Thursdays, we will be completing the CrossFit Open WODs during class times with a partner (judge).   We will also be hosting the Open WODs on either Saturday or Sunday mornings each week.  This will be a more formal, competitive type atmosphere, with designated heat times that you’ll have to sign up for, but will be open to Southie and unaffiliated athletes only.  Scores will be validated by those you work out along side of day in and day out, so it’s very unintimidating.  We will be doing these workouts again in a years time so it is a great way to measure progress down the line and also to identify weaknesses.  If you have any questions about the Opens, talk to your coaches.

Friendly Competition is the best part about CrossFit.  It’s not about being the best, it’s about competing with yourself and pushing yourself harder than you usually do.  There is nothing quite like the camaraderie that is built around the feeling of pushing yourself to the limits alongside your peers.  It’s the reason why I love CrossFit and the reason why I encourage each of you to take part, no matter where you are in your CrossFit Journey.  Registration is really easy and only costs $20.  Again, whether you decide to register or not, we are all going to be doing these WODs in class on Wednesdays.  To add to that, the CrossFit Games were on ESPN2 the past two years and will most likely make a bigger splash this year.  So if you ask me, why not take part and be able to say you took part in the first round when you are watching them with your friends?  Click here to register and don’t forget to choose CrossFit Southie as your affiliate on the right side of the page!

I’ve had some burning questions about the Opens for a while now. Thanks for writing about it! Can you clarify when the WODs will be done in classes? Wednesday or Thursday? Thanks!

I know the post says both Wednesday and Thursday, but the actual games site says the WODs will be announced every Wednesday at 5pm, so I was thinking they would be on Thursdays. I know I have one conflict week, where I’ll be out of town Thursday through the following Tuesday, so I was going to see if I could do it at a Wednesday night class.

The Wod will be released at 8pm on Wed nights and we will do the Wod all day in classes on Thursday. We will have a retest day on Saturday or Sunday. If there any conflicts such as Dereks, the Wod can be completed during Open Gym, off hours or around classes where necessary. A judge is needed for workouts to be validated. We will put out more info in weeks to come.

    Power Snatch: 145×3
    WOD: 17:19 Rx

I would love to participate in the Open, but for someone who’s kind of on the fence between L2 and RX, I wasn’t really sure if it made sense. To log scores you have to complete the WOD at RX right?

That’s essentially where I was last year. I only signed up because we were doing the WODs in class anyways, so I figured I might as well make them count. After the fact I was SO glad that I decided to do it.

HQ did a great job last year giving us WODs that most athletes could compete in on their own level. For example, if they gave us an AMRAP consisting of 10 wall balls, 20 double-unders, 3 muscle ups, anyone who can’t do a muscle up is getting a score of 30 on that WOD. Instead last year we got as many reps possible of 150 wall balls, 90 double-unders, 30 muscle-ups. I didn’t even get to the muscle-ups, but I still came away with a score that really tested me. Take a look at last year’s WODs. If you could do those Rx then I say go for it, it’s all AMRAPs.

I’m not delusional, I have ZERO chance of moving on to Regionals, but I’m still freakin psyched for this. I can put up a score on WOD 13.1, see my overall rank in the region, and try to raise it as the weeks go on. I don’t have to be concerned about the elite, I’m looking at the people down on my level. Plus if you’re friends with Crossfitters around the country you have these WODs that everyone will be doing, and are guaranteed to be judged the same exact way. I have a blast every week competing against my crew.

Davies, you’ll be able to handle most if not all movements/weights during the Open. Like Jason said, its cool to check your weekly results and have them on record for the next time you try that WOD. Gonna be siiiick

Well I can see you two have pretty much left me only one option…
        I’m in…. let’s see what happens.

Just to clarify, is level one not doing toes to bars? It looks like a different workout altogether. Thank you!!

    • Chris Berretta 02/06/2013 at 6:25 pm

Ms. Meg, Level 1 does include the toes to bar and the burpee lateral jumps but instead of a squat snatch (very challenging movement) it is broken down to its separate components (the power snatch, then an overhead squat) – still 4 rounds, still tough 🙂
