Phil “no longer in the” Hulse

Phil Hulse was one of our very first members here at CFS and we are truly sad to see him go.  Phil had a hand in the programming today (his last day at CFS) and each and everyone of you should set a new C&J pr to send him on his way.  Best of luck in Sunshine State Phil, we’ll miss our little brother.

We have a lot of exciting events in the coming months. Make sure that you mark you calendars!

  1. September 18th– Paleo Brunch at the Colvin’s. Starting at 11am. $5 to join in. Bring a specialty paleo brunch item if you would like! Kristen and James live in Southie, we will give their address and directions in a later post.
  2. September 24th & 25th. CFNE GARAGE GAMES! There are few spots left for this competition. There are scaled and RX divisions. the even is great for first time competitors. Don’t miss out. Southie has A LOT of members competing. If you don’t feel ready to compete yet, then please come out and support your fellow members.
  3. October 1st: Southie 1 year anniversary celebration. During morning classes: Photo Scavenger Hunt- more details to come. Then at night, we are partying hard upstairs at the Stadium. The Stadium has an enormous private room with a big dance floor and full bar. We will be providing lots of appetizer food, a DJ, and hopefully a slide-show. Friends and Family are welcome. I will be sending out an Evite very soon.
  4. The Month of October=Breast Cancer Awareness Month– We are going to be selling shirts to raise money for Susan G Komen. I am stumped on what to put on these t-shirts. If anyone has any clever ideas that involve CrossFit Southie and breast cancer please post to comments. All I know is that I want pink t-shirts with green writing….other than that I am stumped!

Ames- what if you did a pink shirt with Southie’s zip code in green numbers with the beginning 0 as the breast cancer awareness ribbon…..

  2. Lauren 08/31/2011 at 6:35 pm

Love the shirt ideas! Maybe something like CrossFit Southie saving As Many RACKS As Possible (with the letters AMRAP underlined) and a breast cancer symbol through “racks” so it is obvious.

  8. Maze 08/31/2011 at 12:47 am

Phil – you will be greatly missed bro. Best of luck down in Tampa. Make sure whatever box you wind up going plays Party Rock on repeat. DO WORK!

No PR on the C&J, stayed put at 235
    “Stems” – 6:17 RX

On the t-shirt note I like 2 ideas:

    1. Power House’s “Will WOD for Boobs”
    2. Justin’s play on the Irish Blessing

maybe idea 1 on the front and idea 2 on the back?????

  9. Sean 08/31/2011 at 12:38 am

    C+J: 205
    Stems: 10:04 rx

No PR on the c+j, sorry Phil. Good luck in FL!

  11. Amy 08/30/2011 at 8:14 pm

Looks like I will be having several shirts made…lots of great ideas! Burpees for boobs has been taken, so we probably won’t use that one. But love all of the others.

  12. Aaron 08/30/2011 at 8:01 pm

    Best of luck Phil.

  13. Nicole 08/30/2011 at 7:38 pm

  14. Joe 08/30/2011 at 7:26 pm

    C&J: 195
Stems: 14:34 @ L3…this hurt mentally and physically.

Phil! We’ll miss you, kid! Come back often.

Nice work on the dubs, Mullins!

  15. Nick 08/30/2011 at 6:33 pm

Ash – go to They have Burpees for Boobs shirts, hats and tanks. I expect you to be sportin one of the three within 10 days…get on it.

Had to modify the strength and WOD today bc of the shoulder

    Strength: Front Squat 245×3
WOD 1: Stems but subbed front squats for squat cleans: 7:02
    WOD 2: 29:01
    3 Rnds
    800m Run
    50 GHD Sit ups
    50 GHD Back Extensions

  16. Gill 08/30/2011 at 3:20 pm

I like, on the front of the shirt: “Burpees for Boobs” (or another quote), and then two of the Crossfit Southie shamrocks (in boob spots)

Sort of like this, but with our shamrocks:

    I would wear it!

  17. Arik 08/30/2011 at 2:42 pm

worked up to a 190 lb. C&J, but managed to nail my self with the weight on the way up.

WOD @ 115 lbs. and 24 in. box jump in 17:03

I’m doing something wrong. I don’t feel like my Met Cons are improving.

  18. Justin S. 08/30/2011 at 2:11 pm

I sent this to Amy but here is my idea, the “CFS Irish Blessing”…

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind always be at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And may God bless your Rack

  19. Ash 08/30/2011 at 2:06 pm

Jaime – LOVE that idea too!!!!!

  20. Ash 08/30/2011 at 2:04 pm

I am pretty sure I saw coach Nick wearing this months ago, but I have been dying to get a breast cancer awareness t-shirt that reads:

    “Burpee’s for Boobs!”

OR something along those lines..I will put my thinking cap on and bring some fresh idea’s tonight!

  21. jaime 08/30/2011 at 1:30 pm

WOW Alec those are great ideas for the T’s! You must really like boobs too LOL
Ooh I just thought of one: Will WOD for boobs!

  22. Mullins 08/30/2011 at 1:15 pm

    C&J: 215
    WOD: 10:47 Rx

Finally got some unbroken double unders on the last two sets of 30. I could barely string together 2 a month ago.

  23. Alec 08/30/2011 at 1:04 pm

Phil, best of luck down South. I didn’t hit 245 this morning for you like I hoped, but I still got a 243 PR in your honor.

9:49 on metcon, those extra 4″ really slowed me down.

    Ideas for the t-shirt-
“Do you love boobs? Do Crossfit”
    “Crossfit Southie loves breasts”
“Lift Big Weights, Save the Boobs”
    “Crossfit: 3, 2, 1 for breasts”

  24. Gill 08/30/2011 at 1:00 pm

With Mel as inspiration: 104 C&J
WOD: 12:10 @ 85, subbed power cleans for squat cleans (hip flexor tendinitis)
    Still brutal!!!

  25. jaime 08/30/2011 at 12:01 pm

Good luck in Florida, Phil, we’ll miss you!!!!
and sorry no PR on my C&J today but I tried!
    C&J 135×1 failed on the jerk at 145 🙁
wod 12:38 105# squat cleans, 20 in. box jmp

  26. Leann 08/30/2011 at 4:43 am

🙁 see ya , Phil. It won’t be the same without you-

  27. dudley 08/30/2011 at 2:08 am

good luck phil, it was fun trying to keep up with you!

  28. Alec 08/30/2011 at 1:20 am

And by serving Goose means a bottle is a serving. Just kidding, unless it’s a very tiny bottle. Phil, I’m going to hit a 245 C&J PR for you tomorrow morning. Either that or 250.

  29. Goose 08/30/2011 at 12:57 am
