Member Spotlight
It’s our pleasure to introduce our newest Member Spotlight Jenny Burns! Jenny is such a hard worker and her progress absolutely shows that! We love the uplifting and fun attitude she brings with her. Jenny does a great job with staying positive when working around injuries and still giving it 100%, which isn’t easy for everyone to do!

She was an incredible help at The Showdown this year, giving up her weekend to judge, volunteer and be there for anything that was needed. She did an amazing job keeping the prize packs organized and distributed! We really appreciate her help with such a big event for the gym. Jenny is consistant in the gym as well as frequenting our social events. We’re so happy to have her in the CFS community! Check out her interview below!

For being featured in our Member Spotlight, Jenny will receive a FREE Half Hour Massage, compliments of our in-house therapist Natalie Johnson!

Jenny

Name: Jenny Burns
Profession: Director/Divisional Merchandise Manager for Staples
When did you start at Crossfit Southie? November 2017

What is your Favorite movement and WOD?
My favorite movements are Power Cleans, Double Unders, Lunges and anything with the Sandbags. I really like DT, Marathon Monday, Abbate and Badger- pretty much anything that has a run plus cleans or dubs. I also love Annie and do it a lot when traveling.

Which Class do you Frequent? The 6:30AM “Masters” Class. It’s a smaller class but with really strong, talented and funny people.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far?
Last year around this time was the first time I did a rope climb. I’m still scared of it so anytime I complete a full rope climb I’m proud of it.

What are your Fitness Goals?
Overall for my long term health I really just want to be fit, strong and appreciative of my body- I never want my body to be the reason that keeps me from doing something. Short term I want to be able to do 10 strict pull ups at a time, right now I can barely get 2 and some days only 1 so I have a lot of work to do. I’d also like to add weight to some movements- clean, back and front squat. Lastly I’ve had a shoulder injury which is slowly getting better so continuing to heal and not re-injuring it has been a big focus.

What is your Favorite Part of Crossfit?
I love the team mentality- being able to cheer, compete and be coached. I’ve made some best friends through Crossfit and it really gives you an instant community. I love knowing that all I have to do is show up and I’ll get a good workout- having someone else who knows so much more than me program, demo and instruct the workouts is really invaluable. I also like the mental benefit, its helped a lot with getting my mind off stress and gives me a lot of clarity to start the work day. Lastly, one of my favorite things is Crossfit Southie itself-both the people and the space.

How did you get involved in CrossFit and what was your first WOD/experience?
My friend had been really active in Crossfit and kept telling me I would love it. I had always played sports or worked out but had gotten into a bad routine when I moved back to Boston of just going on the elliptical and then “stretching” which was mostly me just watching netflix on my phone and then laying on a mat. I knew I needed something else to motivate me so I started at Crossfit Framingham.

My first true WOD was a partner workout which was very humbling because I had to scale everything and take a lot of breaks while my partner was doing RX. It was motivating though and I started going consistently 4-5 days a week. When Crossfit Framingham closed I joined Crossfit Southie and I’m so glad I did!

Coming to Crossfit Southie has made me so much better on all levels- technically, endurance, strength and motivation. It really is all due to the great coaches and impressive athletes. I really appreciate how the coaches at Crossfit Southie encourage you to scale the number of reps and not just the movement. It’s made me attempt a lot of movements and improve on them that I wouldn’t have previously. I try to drop in at boxes when I travel for work and each time it makes me more appreciative that I get to workout at Crossfit Southie every day.

What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit? I’m not going to lie, I am not great on the hobbies front but I do love to read and travel. I’m also a big fan of dive bars.

Traveling Jenny!

What’s a “Fun Fact” about you?
I have a goal to travel to a new country each year- this year was Iceland and Mexico. I’m at 26 countries so far with my favorites being Argentina because of Patagonia and Australia because that’s where my sister lives.
