2017 CrossFit Open Recap
The 2017 CrossFit Open is officially closed! Five weeks of hard work, PRs, new accomplishments, exhausting workouts, and hopefully a little bit of fun have come to an end. We want to congratulate everyone who participated in the Open this year – whether it be your first time or seventh – congratulations on making it through a tough five weeks of competition!

The best part of Open season is never about winning. It’s about pushing yourselves to do something out of your comfort zone and doing things you never thought possible. We saw so many people pushing to complete workouts as prescribed even though they thought they’d do the scaled division. We saw first dumbbell snatches, first toes to bar and bar muscle ups, PR squat snatches, PR’s on last year’s 16.4, first double unders, and so many more awesome things! Our eldest CrossFit Southie member, Gale (85 years old), even became Instagram famous (if you ask her, she’ll tell you she “went viral”) for her rendition of 17.1. The Open truly is for everyone! We are so proud of everyone for tackling this challenge, and are already looking forward to next year!

As you know, this year we introduced a new component to the Open… an Internal Open Team Competition! All Open participants were assigned to teams. Each week, the team was ranked based on their performance in that week’s workout. We had lots of fun creating team names, taking team photos, and getting to know some new friends over the five weeks. At the end of it all, Team Forging Elite Fatness, led by captain Mooch (we can all thank him for that name) came out on top. Sully’s Squad came in 2nd place, and Team Brownie Points rounded out the top 3. Congratulations to everyone! You can check out the full standings HERE.

The CrossFit Southie team is still in the hunt for a spot at Regionals. After closing out 17.5 with the gym’s best finish (2nd in the Region!), the team currently sits in 20th place. Only the top 15 teams advance to Regionals; however, there’s still a chance! Once Individuals competitors have accepted their Regional invites, the leaderboard will shift. This could bump the team into the top 15 and send the Southie squad to Regionals for the 7th year in a row. Keep your fingers crossed!

We also want to send out a huge congratulations to our own Brian Campbell and Cindy Ewing for moving on to the next round of competition, the Masters Online Qualifier! In order to move on to the next round, you have to place in the top 200 in the WORLD in your age division. Brian finished in 157th place out of 38106 competitors in the 35-39 Division. Cindy finished in 186th place out of 1574 competitors in the 60+ division. This is an amazing accomplishment and we are so proud of them! They will be training hard to get ready for the next phase of competition which kicks off in late April. Congratulations and best of luck to Brian & Cindy!

Let’s keep the energy and excitement rolling and keep attacking your workouts the same way you attacked these Open workouts. Hungry for more competition? Stay tuned for details about our upcoming In-House Team Throwdown! It’s an event you won’t want to miss! Post to comments about your favorite Open moments or PRs!
