We Stand With You

Throwback to when we used to park cars in this lot

I grew up in a white town, and went to a college with 0.05% black enrollment, and followed that up to by moving to very white areas of Boston. Even with growing up in a white town, my close friend and neighbor was/is black. She would always make comments about white privilege and would always assure me, I was one of the “good ones” who for the most part understood. Shamefully, I don’t think I understood at all.

When the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown happened I will fully admit, I did not get it. I was so focused on the riots, I had a hard time understanding the message. I sincerely had no idea about the history of this happening in America. I just thought the cop made a mistake, and that Michael Brown was probably doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing. I was completely naive to the hurt and the amount of loss the black community was still enduring.

White privilege is very much a thing. The fact that at one point I didn’t think it was a thing, makes it more of thing. You follow? Over the last 6 years these incidences have continued to happen..and happen..and happen. I have followed these stories, watched videos, and listened to what people have to say about the disproportionate world we live in. I’m starting to understand more, but I know I still have a long way to go. And I promise to not only learn myself, but also teach my children so they are able to see things with clear eyes.

In 2014 I didn’t understand why saying All Lives Matter upset the black community. But with time I have grown to understand that it’s because the message gets lost. Black Lives Matter is the message because we need to stand in solidarity with the Black community. We can all do better, one day at a time.
