Can you believe that 2013 is almost over?! Though it certainly feels like the year flew by in the blink of an eye, if you look back over the past twelve months, you’ll start to realize that a LOT has happened. As a community, CrossFit Southie has done a lot to be proud of in 2013. Before we start planning all of 2014, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and highlight some of the best CFS moments in 2013.

The year kicked off with a big milestone… Amy & Goose getting hitched! The wedding was beautiful and a great time… and CrossFit-influenced, of course. Goose backsquatted Amy, poofy wedding dress and all, during their entrance to the reception. Make sure you wish them a happy 1 year anniversary on January 26th!

Shortly after, the CrossFit Open kicked off the start of the 2013 competition season. CrossFit Southie had a great showing, with two teams competing in the Open. CrossFit Southie Team A finished in 47th place in the world, out of 2817 teams! They took 6th in the Northeast Region, out of 262 teams. CrossFit Southie Team 2 also had a strong showing, finishing in 54th place in the Northeast. regional team

With their 6th place finish in the Open, Team A moved onto Regionals. After a long, hard weekend of competition, the team finished in 4th place, just a few points outside of a return trip to LA. Next year! The Southie community came out in full force to support them, and it was a fun weekend for everyone.

firstrespondersMany others branched out and competed in local competitions all year long… from Garage Games, to local throwdowns, to our very own Southie Showdown. Our First Responders team also secured a 1st place victory for the 2nd year in a row in the First Responders Challenge.

As we all know, 2013 had its sad moments as well. In January, after the Sandy Hook shooting, a team of Southie members headed down to Newtown to join CrossFitters from all over in a fundraiser WOD. Together, the Southie team contributed $2500 to this charity. After the Marathon Bombings in April, Amy & Goose organized a Marathon Monday WOD to benefit a local Dorchester family. News of the WOD spread throughout the community, and it was completed by CrossFit gyms all over the country. Together we raised over $30,000 for one family. We’re very proud of our community’s willingness to come together and take action to create some good out of these tragedies. Again, we thank you for your support in these efforts!

halloweenCrossFit Southie also grew a lot in 2013 – both our staff and our space. We added two new full time coaches to the mix (Chuck & Haley), along with a new Yoga instructor (Tamara), and a bunch of part-timers (Andrea, Melberg, Ham, Hyatt, Bish, Tracey, Dale, Emily & Schurko). We also added Sean to our Massage Therapy team, allowing us to offer massages 6 days a week!

With all of these new people on our team, we needed more room! In the past few months, we’ve taken on almost 5,000 additional square feet. The “Toaster” is up and running (the newest addition to Green), giving us a lot more room to breathe in Southie Green. We thank you for your patience through all of these renovations . The bathrooms will be done soon, along with the “Pain Cave” for all of your mobility needs. We can’t wait to give you the totally finished product soon! internalthrowdown

Throughout the year, we had a ton of great events: Southie Showdown, Internal throwdown, Scavenger Hunt, Anniversary Party, Whole 30 & Paleo Challenges, and a few certs at the box. We also started some fun new traditions.. our first Beach WOD, Southie 5K, and Halloween WOD!

I agree with Sammy. My biggest accomplishment is consistently showing up to CFS. I’ve made great improvements, competed in my first competitions, changed my eating (for the most part) during the Paleo and Whole 30 challenges, which I’ve kept with (other than the holidays… need to recommit). And I finally can connect a couple of dubs! It shocked me so much, I started laughing and lost them. Most importantly, I’ve met so many fantastic people. Thanks to all of the coaches for helping me continue to improve… I look forward to more in 2014.

What a fantastic year it has been! I love taking that walk down 2013’s memory lane. I can still remember the most beautiful look in Goose’s eyes as he adoringly stared into Amy’s eyes an was finally able to we’d the woman of his dreams. I, personally, love the commitment that Goose and Amy model for each other, for our shared community, and our athletic accomplishments! I love Southie! Miss y’all…

Joining CFS and showing up every week is my biggest accomplishment. In the past five years I’ve struggled to find something that fit. I’ve been a member of a corporate gym, planet fitness, a bootcamp style gym and trained with a RKC. The past six months are CFS has been a totally different experience. Thanks to Goose and Amy, the coaches and fellow members. Particularly those who have been stuck with me for partner WODs!

Biggest accomplishments? Largely because I still have so far to go, I kinda forgot how many I had!
    In 1 year’s time I:
    * Increased deadlift PR by 80lbs…from 245lbs to 325lbs
    * Increased front squat PR by 55lbs…from 185lbs to 240lbs
    * Learned how to kip, eventually getting 20 pull ups and 16 T2B without coming off of bar
    * Also learned how to connect dubs, eventually getting a set of 31
    * Got my first-ever pistols and HSPUs
    * Competed twice (which I never EVER thought I’d do) and had an absolute blast
I had a rather extensive list of 25 goals for 2013. I hit 14 of the 25, which isn’t bad. 5 of the missed goals were related to the Olympic lifts…and I’m looking forward to participating in the Oly classes in 2014…and making some strides there.
Taking the Friday off from work and watching the CrossFit Southie team compete at Regionals was definitely a major highlight. So inspiring to watch all of the amazing athletes. I’ll be there cheering you on again this year and hope to take it one step further and cheer you on at the Games!
And of course continuing to work out with, socialize with, and be part of such an awesome group of individuals is simply the best gift I could ask for.
Happy New Year everyone! Let’s all continue to crush it (and then some) in 2014!
