Fight Club

Women's 10k Last October. Me, Chris, and Mel!

Deep thoughts by Mel Olinito….
Totally loved getting this email.

Crossfit as Fight Club?
Last night on a rare date with my husband in the South End I bumped in to a crossfitter. My husband is not a crossfitter. He does not know what a clean and jerk is nor does he really like talking about it at dinner. He now appreciates that it is important to me but does not really understand it, or my obsession to discuss it, share it, or convince others to join! We had just sat down at the bar and I looked across the way and saw someone that I recognized. Was it someone from the neighborhood? It took me a second to place him- oh yes, fellow crossfiter. We made eye contact and gave each other a nod of recognition. He was probably thinking the same thing I was- no need to interrupt date night to say hi. But, suddenly crossfit was back in my mind. I could not help but wonder, did he do those snatch balances this morning that were still leaving me exhausted? The bread came out and I had to sneak another peak, was he paleo or would he eat the bread?

Living in the South End and working in the Back Bay I have literally bumped in to crossfitters at so many random times in my “normal” life. It is so fun to see people in our work clothes, going out clothes, and even in my mom mode. I feel the same way every time I see someone- we have a little secret. Something amazing that we are willing to share if you are open to it. But, if not, just seeing people out in “normal life” reminds me of crossfit and it makes me a little happier. When I pass you in the Back Bay I will smile and give you a little nod but secretly we will both be thinking the same thing- how did those power cleans go this morning? Sometimes I think it is like our own personal fight club and that is the best break from normal life I can get!

    Back to posting
OHS 185 x 2- everything felt tight, not that good.
DNF at Rx. Didn’t have time to complete the last round of OHS.

I know exactly what you mean. When I see another person wearing a Batman tshirt I think “there’s a fellow comic book nerd”. I don’t need to say anything, I can just nod and know they’re thinking the same thing as me, something like “I knew when Johnny Storm died in Fantastic Four #587 that they would somehow bring him back for issue #600”.

    OHS: 115×3
    WOD: ??:?? L2

The 7PM class had clock issues so I don’t know what my time was, but I do know it was a PR. Last time I did Nancy I used 65# and things got ugly. This time I used 75# and was 2 reps away from doing it unbroken. Rx next time.

Good thing the first rule of Crossfit isn’t the same as the first rule of Fight Club. I’d have failed from the first day.

Cool picture and insight into our little cult… I mean CFS club.

195×3 ran out of time to go heavier. 11:52 Rx- couldn’t catch up to Goose’s time.

This kid will win the CF games in 2034 if there are lots of pullups involved: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXN3QFJRO-Y

    OHS: 145
    Nancy: 18:06 (I think?) at L2.

Wanted to do the OHS sets as unbroken as possible. I’m going to lay all blame for my 7/8 and 10/5 sets on Rod Stewart, who somehow came on the stereo during a West Coast Wednesday.

Mel, As I sat across from the bar I couldn’t help but think the exact same thing. I felt bad for not coming over but figured it was date night without the kids so didn’t want to interrupt.

The bread was delicious (caught red handed)

Love this- so true! I have to schedule social outings with my CFS friends just so we can talk about our OHS, C&J, how sore we are, paleo… without feeling like we are talking about a secret club we are all a part of in front of our non-CF friends (who think we are speaking a different language when discussing CF anyway!)! 🙂

    OHS: 95 x 3
    Nancy: 18:46 (I think, can’t remember!) Rx
